Grounded Again: SpaceX Delays Starship’s Big Test Flight

  • Launch halted: SpaceX called off its 10th Starship test flight just 30 minutes before liftoff due to a ground systems issue.
  • Ongoing struggles: The postponement follows a string of explosions and failed missions that have plagued Starship throughout 2025.
  • High stakes: Starship is central to Elon Musk’s Mars ambitions and NASA’s Moon plans, but major technical hurdles remain.

An Attempt in Texas

On Sunday, SpaceX canceled the launch of its giant Starship rocket in Texas due to a ground systems issue. The company said it needed more time to fix the problem and plans to try again on Monday.

This would have been Starship’s 10th test flight, aiming to separate the booster, check backup engines, and release mock Starlink satellites on a short trip around Earth.

A Troubled Track Record

Starship has faced a rough road. Three test flights this year exploded mid-air, and a June ground test ended in a fireball.

Since its first launch in April 2023, failures have outweighed successes. Only four flights showed partial progress, mainly with the Super Heavy booster, which SpaceX has even managed to catch mid-air using giant robotic “chopsticks.”

Musk’s Vision vs. Reality

At 403 feet (123 meters), Starship is the biggest rocket ever built, even larger than NASA’s Apollo-era Saturn V. Elon Musk sees it as a fully reusable ship that could carry humans to Mars by 2029 and eventually help build a colony there.

NASA also plans to use a version of Starship for its Artemis missions to return astronauts to the Moon. But before that can happen, SpaceX still needs to prove it can launch safely, land reliably, and refuel in orbit — challenges it has yet to overcome.

Environmental and Political Pressures

Repeated explosions have worried regulators and environmentalists, with rocket debris falling across the Caribbean and concerns about how launches could affect ecosystems in Texas, Mexico, and Hawaii.

At the same time, Musk’s shifting focus between his businesses, politics, and past government role has raised doubts among investors about whether he can give SpaceX the focus needed to make Starship reliable.

The Future

SpaceX insists that failure is part of innovation and that each test brings valuable data. If the 10th attempt finally succeeds, it will mark a step forward but still leave formidable engineering and regulatory challenges before Starship can become the workhorse Musk and NASA are counting on.

Since its first launch in April 2023, SpaceX’s Starship has had nine test flights, with only a few partially successful. Several missions exploded mid-air or failed on the launchpad, including tests in August 2023, March 2024, and June 2025. Some flights achieved soft landings, but repeated setbacks highlight the challenges SpaceX faces in making Starship safe and fully operational.
